Due to the nature of the topic and the wide range of information available, in order to cover only a tiny bit of it properly, some of the websites included here may have a commercial element in addition to the excellent information they provide.  Such inclusion does not constitute an endorsement of product or service by archaeolink.com.  Sites are included for information value only.

The number of sites available online for this topic is enormous.  This site can not and does not index all travel resources for a country.  These "tourism" pages are basically designed as a supplement to the Mauritania Social Studies links rather than for the avid business or pleasure traveler.

For those of you for whom this "supplementary" material is not enough, the following does provide some idea of what is available online and will hopefully be a good starting point for a more serious search.

Mauritania __ "Mauritania isn't the sort of country that attracts tourists in their droves: it's mostly desert, entirly poor, politically unpredictable and expensive. It's also desolate. Add to that disputes, landmines or violence on the borders with Mali, Senegal and the Western Sahara region of Morocco (check a map; that doesn't leave much) and it seems like maybe a visit to Mauritania is more trouble than it's worth." History, culture, statistics and more. - illustrated - From Lonely Planet - http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/africa/mauritania/

Mauritania, Africa - Travel Guide __ "There are three distinct geographic regions in Mauritania; a narrow belt along the Senegal River Valley in the south, where soil and climatic conditions permit settled agriculture; north of this valley, a broad east-west bank characterised by vast sand plains and fixed dunes held in place by sparse grass and scrub trees; and a large northern arid region shading into the Sahara Desert and characterised by shifting sand dunes, rock outcroppings and rugged mountainous plateaus with elevations of more than 1,500 ft."
